Conker Live and Reloaded
Ages: Mature

This is really a two-fer and it's only on the Xbox; the original Conker's Bad Fur Day and Conker Live and Reloaded. This is just fine because it gives everyone a chance to play and revisit that drunken, soused foul mouthed, bad squirrel Conker before you go online with Live and Reloaded. When it came out in 2000, it had all the reputation worthy of the "M" rating it received. Today, after 5 years the game doesn’t feel that offensive. Sure there is plenty of blood and guts, foul language and toilet humor, but if you overlook the moral turpitude of the character, it is the kind of game that 8 yr old boys love. Women will take issue at the regressive attitude towards women -- even though they are objectified as flowers. The game is a favorite mostly because of its clever humor, and how many games have you played that are really funny?

About half the game takes place in an excrement heavy environment, the other parts are colorful and all parts are nicely rendered, with the graphics well in support of the game's humor. The game can be played with essentially one button, and that keeps your attention on the game instead of on your fingers. The characters you meet in the game are amusing and unusual. Personalities are fleshed out – even those with just a short walk-on.

The game changes markedly near the end both in tone and pace. The scene moves from one of a bucolic colorful countryside to a war torn battleground – just in time for Conker Reloaded.

Conker Reloaded is basically an online battle game with Conker – as his indomitable self, in army gear, sporting some heavy artillery and pulling the usual and unusual shenanigans. It may be the tenor of the times, but Conker reminds me of the character Milo in Catch 22 -- always wheeling and dealing and still somehow escaping unscathed. There are a couple of training plays that you can do against the computer to get you up to speed for the online game. From there you are on your own.
