Makai Kingdom - Chronicles of the Sacred Tome
Ah so -- you have elected to serve Lord Zetta in recreating his Makai Kingdom.
Lord Zetta once the most powerful of the netherworld characters has,
because of his overarching hubris, gotten himself bound into the Sacred
Tome and therefore need your help. You have seven possible options for
your characters - Healer, Male/Female Magician, Male/Female Warrior,
Thief, and finally Merchant. I must admit the I have a hard time taking
these Kewpie doll figures seriously.
Makai Kingdom - Chronicles of the Sacred Tome is a battle oriented RPG. There is almost no story, a fair amount of wry
humor and you main activity throughout is killing enemies. It is absolutely important that
you make your characters as strong as possible to be able to fight the enemies as the
game progress. Your strategy is to work the system to increase your score using combo
attacks, picking up bonuses and employing you team to its best advantage.
Those who liked Disgaea by Nippon Ichi will probably be comfortable with the
game's format. For me -- there were too many statistics to keep track of. Drop-
down message screens as a technique to move the game along breaks up the flow
of the game. I have the feeling that I am giving instructions where better
programming by the designer would have taken care of the intermediate steps. You cannot simply
attack someone. You have to:
1. Select character - press X
2. Select Attack from menu - press X
3. Open command menu - select "Execute"
4. Open command menu when finished and select "End turn"
It's just too much work. But there are those who thrive on this sort of stuff. More power to them!
